for all stopping times for B , and all p > 0 , where Ap and Bp are numerical constants. Although the best values for the constants Ap and Bp in (1.1) are found below too, in most of the cases it is much easier to evaluate E( ) rather than E( 1+p=2) . In this paper we shall answer the question on how the inequality (1.1) can be optimally modified if the quantity E( 1+p=2) is replaced by a function of E( ) . It turns out that the left-hand inequality in (1.1) admits such a modification. In Theorem 2.2 below we prove that:

Optimal Stopping with Advanced Information Flow: Selected Examples

Abstract We study optimal stopping problems for some functionals of Brownian motion in the case when the decision whether or not to stop before (or at) time t is allowed to be based on the δ-advanced information Ft+δ, where Fs is the σ-algebra generated by Brownian motion up to time s, s ≥ −δ, δ > 0 being a fixed constant. Our approach involves the forward integral and the Malliavin calculus fo...

Contributions to the Theory of Optimal Stopping for One–Dimensional Diffusions Savas Dayanik Advisor: Ioannis Karatzas We give a new characterization of excessive functions with respect to arbitrary one–dimensional regular diffusion processes, using the notion of concavity. We show that excessive functions are essentially concave functions, in some generalized sense, and vice–versa. This, in tu...

The Inverse First-passage Problem and Optimal Stopping

Given a survival distribution on the positive half-axis and a Brownian motion, a solution of the inverse first-passage problem consists of a boundary so that the first passage time over the boundary has the given distribution. We show that the solution of the inverse firstpassage problem coincides with the solution of a related optimal stopping problem. Consequently, methods from optimal stoppi...

Maximal Inequalities for Reflected Brownian Motion with Drift

Let = (t) t0 denote the unique strong solution of the equation d t = 0 sign(t) dt + dB t satisfying 0 = 0 , where > 0 and B = (B t) t0 is a standard Brownian motion. Then jj = (j t j) t0 is known to be a realisation of the reflected Brownian motion with drift 0. Using this representation we show that there exist universal constants c 1 > 0 and c 2 > 0 such that c 1 E H () E max 0t j t j c 2 E H...

Discounted optimal stopping for maxima in diffusion models with finite horizon∗

We present a solution to some discounted optimal stopping problem for the maximum of a geometric Brownian motion on a finite time interval. The method of proof is based on reducing the initial optimal stopping problem with the continuation region determined by an increasing continuous boundary surface to a parabolic free-boundary problem. Using the change-of-variable formula with local time on ...
